OUR HISTORY

In 1984, 10 members met with the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter in Salisbury, North Carolina to join Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Those individuals included, Margaret Buggs, Lillian Foulks, Alice Rucker Henderson, Debra Norman Hogan, Cynthia Miller, Elaine Rector, Marlena Ricks, Charlotte Roberts, Theresa Townsend Scott and Kathy Wiley. They were initiated April 26, 1984, joined the sorority and remained with the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter for one year.

During the period of time, there were other members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in the area who were interested in forming an alumnae chapter in Lexington. The requirement for chartering a chapter was the need to have at least twelve interested members. With other Sorors already in the area and the prevailing interest being expressed, plans were made for chartering a local chapter. Those members included Lucille Yarborough and Arlene L. Pinnix-Morrow.

The Lexington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta was chartered April 26, 1985 with Regional Director, Soror Bertha Maxwell Roddey, officiating. The chapter became a part of the South Atlantic Region. To distinguish between the other Lexington Alumnae Chapters, the chapter was later renamed, as Lexington (NC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Alice Rucker Henderson became the chapter’s first president.

LEADERSHIP

OUR PROGRAMS

Since its founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. The Clinton Alumnae Chapter strives to implement programs that fall under our National Guidelines.

Financial planning, consumer education, money management, investments and employment opportunities are but a few of Delta's concerns addressed under economic development.

  • Educational Development

Each year, local Delta Chapters conduct projects designed to address the community's concerns about excellence in education. On a national level, Delta's pursuit of educational excellence takes the form of scholarships and grants to individual members and local chapters.

  • International Awareness and Involvement

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has always been a proponent of helping those who are in need, especially in third world countries.

  • Physical and Mental Health

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has programs designed to address health education programs and health fairs. Delta also supports medical research that examines illnesses that affect specific segments of the country's population.

  • Political Awareness and Involvement

Though non-partisan in nature and purpose, Delta understands the importance of and the need for an informed electorate. Delta's concern for the public's "need-to-know" and the enfranchisement of all Americans has been the philosophical basis for public service programs in this area.

Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.
